Indian Railways to run 100% on electricity by 2024: Piyush Goyal

Speaking at the India-Brazil Business Forum, Union Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal said that the Indian Railways is expected to switch entirely to electricity by 2024, as it is already shunting diesel locomotives gradually out of service. He further said that India is also planning to make the entire railways network a "net-zero emission network" by 2030.

The 289-km Khurda-Bolangir railway line in Odisha was conceived in 1995 and was supposed to provide succour to one of the poorest regions in the country. Yet, it languished for decades until 2015 when it engaged the attention of the PM when he was reviewing the status of projects which had failed to get off. This project will serve as a boon for the people of Odisha & will help unlock the economic potential of the region.

Predictive Maintenance of Rolling Assets: On-line Monitoring of Rolling stock System (OMRS) & Smart Yards being implemented for automatic identification of defects

Indian Railways is witnessing a paradigm shift in maintenance practices of Rolling Stock from “Time Based Maintenance” to “Condition Based Predictive Maintenance”, with a view to enhance reliability and availability. OMRS which consists of sub-systems like Acoustic Bearing Detector (ABD)/ Bearing Acoustic Monitor (RailBAM), Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD)/Wheel Condition Monitor (WCM) & PhotoTAG, is being installed at 20 locations in Phase-I.

Noble step towards Sustainable Development: Indian Railways’ first waste to energy plant commissioned

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) Zone has opened the first waste-to-energy plant in the city of Bhubaneswar in which world class patented technology, known as Polycrack, has been inducted to deal with garbage disposal. The plant has a catalytic converter and it converts the waste material into light diesel oil, gas, carbon powder and water.
