Gradual resumption of select passenger services by Indian Railways

Railways will restart passenger train operations from 12th May, 2020, initially with 15 pairs of trains. Only online e-Ticketing will be done through IRCTC website or through Mobile App. No tickets will be booked across the reservation counter on any Railway Station. Only passengers with valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the railway stations and it will be mandatory for them to wear face cover and undergo thermal screening at the station. Only passengers who are found asymptomatic will be permitted to travel.

Railway operates 468 "Shramik Special" trains till 11th May (1000 hrs) across the country

Subsequent to the MHA order regarding movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places by special trains, Railways has been operating "Shramik Special" trains from 1st May. Till 11th May (1000 hrs), a total of 468 "Shramik Special" trains have been run from various states across the country. These trains are being run by Railways only after concurrence is given both by the State which is sending the passengers and the State which is receiving them. During the journey, passengers are given free meals and water. Proper screening of passengers is ensured before boarding the train.

Railways geared up to provide Covid Care Centers to State authorities

In the battle against Covid-19, Railways is working tirelessly to supplement the health care efforts of the Government of India. Railways has converted its 5231 coaches as Covid Care Centers. These coaches can be used for very mild cases as per guidelines issued by MoHFW. 215 stations have been identified for placement of Covid Care Centers. Out of these, Railways will provide healthcare facilities at 85 stations, while in 130 stations states can request Covid Care Coaches only if they agree to provide staff and essential medicines. Railways shall take care of water, electricity, repairs, catering and security of Covid Care Centers. Railways is deploying more than 2500 doctors and 35,000 paramedics and is producing its own PPEs as well to meet the Covid-19 challenge.

The enhanced running of these parcel special trains in the lockdown period is a step by the Railways to ramp up the freight operations in the country to make it faster, customised and profitable for all. As of now, these trains are being operated on 82 routes. Hon'ble Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry recently held a meeting to bring e-commerce and logistics companies closer to Railways. Since the start of the parcel special service in the lockdown period till 5th May 2020, 2,067 parcel trains have run, out of which 1,988 have been time-tabled trains, and total 54,292 Tonnes of consignments have been loaded with earnings of Rs 19.77 crores.
