Railways has opened up private investment in general-purpose wagons and will allow investors to put in funds in rail cars that can move multiple commodities, including coal, without the need for any special approval. The move will help customers deal with wagon shortage. The investors will get a 10 per cent rebate on a base freight for 15 years for carrying each commodity.

Railways has connected North-east Region to the West Coast by running a Parcel Cargo Express Train (PCET) for transportation of agricultural produce of Northeast region as well as industrial finished goods. It will give a boost to the agricultural community as well as the nascent agro/petro based industries of the Northeast region.

The first phase of the Rs 81,000 crore dedicated rail freight corridors project is likely to be completed in November. Once thrown open, the western and the eastern corridors will help reduce cost of freight transportation between Delhi and Mumbai and Delhi and Howrah, the two most congested rail routes in the country, for both passengers and goods.

Owing to renewed focus on safety by Railways, tracks of some 3,300 km have been laid afresh which is about 700 km more than what the Railways did in 2016-17. In 2017-18, tracks of 4,405 km were upgraded. This has resulted in record drop in the number of accidents which was a double-digit figure, 73, in 2017-18.
