Prices of food and drinks sold in trains by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have been slashed by ₹ 3 to ₹ 10 with the Centre reducing GST on the items from 18 per cent to five per cent. Catering charges in premium trains also will see a cut by ₹ 40 to ₹ 60 per ticket depending on the class of travel. |

The number of deaths and injuries from train collisions or derailment in India was the lowest in at least 18 years in last fiscal year ending March 31. Amid attempts to improve its safety record through mega investments and recruitments, Railways is in the midst of a $130 billion, five-year modernisation plan. |

Indian Railways has provided about 1,25,000 bio-toilets in its coaches till March 2018. This covers about 60% of coaching fleet of Indian Railways. During 2017-18, IR has installed highest ever bio-toilets in coaches which is 40% higher than the set target of 40,000 bio-toilets and 64% higher than the fitment of 34,134 bio-toilets in 2016-17.

As part of its partnership with Railways, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is facilitating various Railways’ production units, workshops and other units go the Green way and in the process equipping them to green the operations and practices, thereby saving ₹10 crores per year.
