New India Budget to transform Railways into a modern, safe, green, affordable and comfortable mode of transport
The Union Minister for Finance Shri Arun Jaitley, in his speech for General Budget 2018-19 has laid out a roadmap for Indian Railways, which is in line with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of New India by 2022. Budget has also seen a drastic scaling up of investments by almost three times to 1,48,528 cr. in 2018-19 (BE) as against 53,989 cr. in 2013-14.
 
Government to set up a rail coach factory in Latur in Marathwada region of Maharashtra, which will bring massive employment opportunities & economic development to the region
A high level meeting was held between Minister for Railways and Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, to discuss the setting up of a massive rail coach factory in Latur, Maharashtra by Indian Railways. This plant would manufacture Electric Multiple Units for suburban trains and coaches for metros.
 
Bringing more transparency in the system; Railways to create database of contract workers including PF registration, salary details etc.
For the first time, Railways will have a database of workers engaged by contractors in non-operational areas such as housekeeping, cleaning, consultancy, training and other such services, to ensure transparency & accountability and adherence to guidelines & norms..
 
For convenience of the passengers, Government will be setting up Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at Post Offices across the country
Indian Railways has signed an MoU with Department of Posts for setting up of Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at Post Offices. PRS counters at Post offices are opened based on technical and commercial feasibility where there are no Railway Reservation Counters in nearby areas.
