The ‘MERIT app (Merit Order Despatch of Electricity for Rejuvenation of Income and Transparency) and the e-bidding portal would provide e-Bidding solution to States to select Independent Power Producers (IPPs) for procurement of power by transferring their domestic coal under the scheme of flexibility in utilization of domestic coal. The app and the web portal would result in optimum utilization of Coal which would save the consumer close to Rs. 20,000 crores five years down the line.
India has been recognised by the World Bank as a front-runner in fight against climate change where solar power is gradually displacing coal as an energy source in the asian country. According to the bank, India is contributing to global efforts to save the planet from the effects of climate change with its conscious choice to use significantly more clean energy to fuel its growth.
As per study, developed under the U.S.-India bilateral program “Greening the Grid”, the technical and economic viability of integrating 175 GW of renewable energy into India’s power grid by 2022 is confirmed, and future course of actions that are favorable for such integration have been identified. The report resolves many questions about how India’s electricity grid can manage the variability and uncertainty of adding large amounts of renewable energy into the grid.
Power distribution companies have saved Rs. 12,000 crore interest outgo after states took over their debt as part of the Centre’s Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojna (UDAY) scheme. At all India level, billing efficiency has increased by 2% to 83% in 2016-17 while the average aggregate technical and commercial loss has come down to 20.2%.
